What Is CCRN?

The CCRN used to be understood to mean “Critical Care Registered Nurse.” However, according to the website of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses(AACN), CCRN does not mean that because they cannot guarantee that the person taking the exam is actually a registered nurse.

The CCRN specialization of the nursing career track relates to licensed critical care in either adult, pediatric or cardiac patients. It is a registered service mark that is owned by the CCRN Certification Corporation.

The CCRN Exam

The CCRN examination is a three hour test that happens to be one of the toughest tests that nurses take to get certified. It is a 150 multiple choice exam that is administered via a computer. Passing this exam and getting a CCRN certification gives a nurse one of the highest licenses in nursing in the United States. It is available any time of the year, five days a week at more than a hundred assessment centers nationwide. Once a year, you can also take the exam via the normal route (pencil and paper) at the National Teaching and Critical Care Exposition.
